What should I expect the first session to be like?
In your first session, we will start to explore what brings you to therapy and develop goals in working together. If you’ve been to therapy before, we can discuss what your previous experiences have been and what you're looking for in a therapist. This will help me to know how I can best meet your needs, and if we are a good fit in working together. If your needs exceed what I can offer, or if we decide we are not a good match, I will refer you to an alternative clinician to ensure you have the best possible care.
What should I do to prepare for my first session?
Before your first session
You will receive a link via email to my online practice software called Simple Practice. This site will provide access to my practice's policies for you to review and electronically sign. In addition, you will be asked to complete an intake questionnaire where you can describe your background and what brings you to therapy. Your answers to these questions will help us get started. Feel free to leave any questions blank that you are unsure how to answer, and we can talk about them when you’re ready.
On the day of your appointment
If feasible, please allow yourself extra time before a scheduled telehealth session so you can feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible. Try to find a private space where you feel safe sharing whatever is on your mind.
How long is a session?
Sessions are 45 minutes long.
How many sessions will I need?
The length of treatment is different for each person. Some individuals seek short-term therapy (e.g. to emotionally prepare for an upcoming event), while others are looking for long-term therapy (e.g. to explore connections between their experiences and current identity). We can discuss the best course of treatment to meet your unique needs and interests.
Do you accept insurance?
Please see the Insurance page for more details.
What is your cancellation policy?
Therapy works best when it's consistent, but life can be unpredictable. If you need to cancel, I ask for 24 hours notice. Otherwise, you will be charged the cost of the cancelled session (based on our agreed sliding scale fee, or the full amount I bill insurance). Please let me know if you feel an exception to the cancellation policy should be made due to extenuating circumstances or emergencies.
Can I contact you in between sessions?
If you need support with anything between sessions, please call or email and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible, talk through it with you, and/or schedule an extra session. However, my practice does not offer 24 hour crisis intervention, so if you have a psychiatric emergency, call 911, 988, or go to your nearest emergency room.
